You know that wave that sweeps through your body when stress hits? Your pulse races, and your thoughts whirl. But what exactly is stress? What are the symptoms, and what can you do to reduce stress levels in your life? We’ve got all the answers for you just below!

What’s Stress, Anyway?

Stress is your body’s natural way of responding to threats and challenges. When we encounter a stress trigger, our bodies release hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to prep us for action. It’s your brain’s way of saying, “Whoa, things are getting busy. Let’s get our systems ready!”

These hormones can actually give you a burst of energy and focus – which is why a little bit of stress isn’t all bad. Think of it as your body’s built in alarm system, making you extra sharp and ready to face those challenges head-on.

But, too much stress over time can drain your energy, leaving you feeling like a battery on its last leg. That’s why it’s crucial to find ways to ease the stress and recharge. If you’re always on high alert, it can throw your body and mind off balance, and you might start noticing various symptoms nudging you to slow down.

Symptoms of Stress

There are lots of different stress indicators. Let’s take a look at the most common ones:

  • Fatigue

  • Memory loss

  • Digestive issues

  • Difficulty relaxing

  • Racing heart

  • Concentration problems

  • Headaches

Not fun, right? Let’s focus on how you can beat the stress instead.

Ways to Reduce Stress

Feeling swamped by thoughts and to-do’s can make your head spin. A great way to unwind and gain control over stress is doing a brain dump! Grab your planner and find a page with plenty of room.

  1. Think about and jot down EVERYTHING that’s currently stressing you out. This could be things you want/should/must do, thoughts or situations.

  2. Once you’ve got it all down, sift through and analyse your stressors.

  3. Lastly, make a new brain dump, i.e. a list of actionable steps to tackle each one of your stressors.

And there you have it – a plan to avoid stress overload and a strategy for those times when it creeps up on you!

Reflect on Your Stress Triggers

It’s also wise to think about what triggers your stress. Ask yourself:

  • When do I feel stressed?

  • Why do those situations stress me out?

  • How do I react to stress?

  • What does stress mean to me?

  • How can I calm down after feeling stressed?

  • Is there anything I can do to prevent stress in similar situations in the future?

Each time you reflect on your stress and its effects, you’re adding valuable insights to your personal toolkit. Scribble down your thoughts (the lined pages in your planner are perfect for this) to revisit whenever you need a reminder.

Chill Out with a Planner

Feeling pressed for time is a common stress factor. By planning your must-dos in advance and organising your time with a planner, you’ll notice a dip in your stress levels. It’s all about getting a grip on your weekly schedule and balancing what needs to get done with what you want to achieve.

If you’re yet to get a planner, now’s the time! It’s your key to decluttering your thoughts and managing your stress levels actively.
